NOT ALL U-HAUL TRIPS end in disaster. Amid a slew of shakily scrawled horror stories, I received a shocking bit of testimony from one of my many dyke-drama survey takers: “I met my ex in July, we moved in together in August, and we were together for four years. It was the best and longest relationship I ever had.” Before the knee-jerk reaction to suggest that the operative word here is had, and that rose-colored glasses are clearly this woman’s favorite fashion accessory, it is necessary to understand how and why this freak occurrence occurred. Given that for the longest time in our history this was our preferred method of hooking up (not counting the convenience of the convent, the concubine palace, prison, and your friendly all-girl boarding school where—-hello!--cohabitation came even before the first date), you’re bound to have a few successes. Some dykes do beat the odds.
